How Much Does It Cost to Become a Yoga Instructor? A Breakdown Guide

Becoming a yoga instructor is a rewarding journey that combines personal development, a passion for the yogic lifestyle, and the desire to teach yoga to others. Before embarking on your yoga teacher training, it’s important to understand the financial investment involved. In this guide, we’ll break down the typical teacher training costings and help you plan for your investment in your future career.

1. Types of Yoga Instructor Certifications

There are several pathways to becoming a certified yoga teacher, each with varying levels of commitment and cost. The most common certifications for yoga teachers are:

  • 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training - This foundational level is often required to begin teaching yoga professionally and register with Yoga Alliance; meaning you can teach yoga as a yoga instructor in gyms and studios with this qualification. Santosha offers Yoga teacher trainings in Bali, Sri Lanka, Byron Bay and Online.
  • 300-hour and 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training Courses – These more advanced certifications allow deeper specialization in yoga philosophy, anatomy, teaching methodology, and advanced yoga postures. Santosha offers a 300-Hour and 500-Hour Yoga teacher training in Bali.
  • Specialized certifications – Programs in prenatal yoga, yin yoga, or children's yoga offer additional skills and career opportunities. Santosha offer a range of in-person and online specialised yoga certification options including:
  • Yin Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Pre + Post Natal Yoga
  • Kids + Teens Yoga
  • Ayurveda
  • Yoga Business
  • Yoga Nidra - online and in Bali
  • Yoga Therapy

All our Santosha Bali, Sri Lanka, Byron Bay and Online  200-hour Yoga Teacher Training students recieve a free online specialised training to develop your skills and add additional training hours - choose from Yin Yoga, Meditation  Pre + Post Natal Yoga  or Kids + Teens Yoga.

Choosing the right program depends on your goals, whether you wish to teach at yoga studios, offer online classes, or deepen your own practice.

2. Core Components of Yoga Teacher Training Course Costs

Tuition Fees

The yoga teacher training investment varies widely depending on the program’s location, duration, and prestige. For example:

  • Local studio-based training
  • Destination trainings, like those offered internationally by registered yoga schools

When comparing costs, look closely at what’s included in the yoga education package and make sure you are studying with a registered yoga school.

Course Materials

Many yoga certification programs require students to purchase:

  • Yoga philosophy texts like the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali
  • Anatomy and physiology books
  • Access to additional online study platforms

At Santosha we give all our Santosha Bali, Sri Lanka, Byron Bay and Online 200 Hour and 300 Hour lifetime access to their online course materials, including printable PDF Manuals. The only additional reading we require you to obtain is The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. This is available in audiobook, book or e-book for Kindle. For your future Yoga Teaching Library, we recommend these books (optional): Yoga for Wellness, Key Muscles of Yoga, Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

Examination Fees

Some programs charge extra for final assessments to become a registered yoga teacher. If you don’t pass on the first attempt, retest fees may apply, so factor this into your budget. At Santosha we do not charge extra for those who may need a little additional help and time to graduate with us 🙂

3. Additional Expenses

Travel and Accommodations

If you’re opting for a retreat-based teacher training course, include travel, lodging, and meals in your budget.

Tips:

  • Look for training centers that offer affordable housing packages or let you choose your own so you are not locked into expensive accommodation packages.
  • Travel during off-peak seasons for discounts.

Equipment and Supplies

Basic tools you'll need for your yoga practice and practice teaching include:

  • High-quality yoga mats
  • Blocks, straps, bolsters
  • Comfortable teaching attire

Purchasing these early ensures you are fully prepared for the learning process and practical training.

Insurance and Licensing to Teach Yoga

As a professional yoga teacher, you’ll likely need:

  • Professional liability insurance - we offer our graduates recommendations of companies that insure yoga teachers at a very reasonable rate
  • Business licenses if you plan to open a yoga studio

These protections are a worthwhile investment in your career longevity.

4. Long-term Investments

Continuing Education

The yoga industry emphasizes lifelong learning. Staying certified with Yoga Alliance often requires completing continuing education hours. Attending workshops in anatomy and physiology, pranayama, meditation techniques, or iyengar yoga keeps your teaching skills sharp and relevant.

All our Santosha Bali, Sri Lanka, Byron Bay and Online 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training students recieve a free online specialised training so you can add continuing education hours to your certification straight away - at your own pace! You can choose from Yin Yoga, Meditation  Pre + Post Natal Yoga  or Kids + Teens Yoga.

Marketing and Promotion

If you dream of running public classes or building your brand as a yoga professional, you’ll want to invest in:

  • Websites and social media presence
  • Business cards and promotional materials
  • Photography sessions for branding

This professional development pays off over time as you attract more students.

5. Financial Aid and Scholarships

Many yoga teacher training courses offer:

  • Scholarships for deserving students
  • Payment plans that allow you to spread tuition across several months

Some registered yoga schools also offer early-bird discounts, so be sure to inquire when applying. Santosha offer a generous earlybird discount on our Bali, Sri Lanka or Byron Bay courses, if you pay in full one month before your course begins 🙂

6. Return on Investment

After successful completion of your program, you can teach at yoga studios, fitness centers, or even create your own yoga classes. Your pay will depend on your location.

If you continue your personal practice, enhance your teaching skills, consider targeting a niche student area, and market yourself well, the investment into your training can lead to a sustainable and fulfilling career - at home or all over the world!

7. Conclusion

Becoming a yoga instructor involves more than mastering yoga poses—it’s a commitment to your personal growth, teaching yoga with authenticity, and embracing a journey of lifelong learning.

While the yoga teacher training cost may seem substantial at first, it’s truly an investment in your future, your community, and your path as a passionate and capable yoga teacher.

Whether you aspire to teach internationally, specialize in prenatal yoga, or inspire others through the wisdom of yoga philosophy, taking this step opens up a world of opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online 200-Hour Courses

How proficient do I need to be at yoga to participate in the Santosha Yoga Training (YTT)?

During the Level 1 RYT-200 program you will have asana sessions every morning and afternoon. We recommend that students have some form of asana practice and are comfortable practicing yoga daily. An advanced practitioner is not necessarily one who can move deeply into advanced poses; it is someone who comes to the mat with a level of maturity, a willingness to learn, and an appreciation of the limits of their own body. This course is not only meant for aspiring instructors. It’s also for people who want to take their practice to a deeper level and share an incredible experience with like-minded souls.

Will I be accepted into the Santosha YTT?

Yes, we believe that all people are deserving of changing their lives! Subsequently, the only prerequisite is a sincere desire in your heart to transform and grow. If you are ready to dedicate yourself with an open heart and mind to study during your time with us, we would love to have you join us – in Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka or Online.

I don’t want to be a teacher – is this course for me?

Santosha courses are much more than just teacher trainings; they are a chance to personally transform and grow. Even if yoga teaching is not your goal, this yoga course will help you deepen your yoga practice, share a unique transformational experience, and be supported by open-hearted mentors and friends. If you want to transform your mind, body, and life then this yoga course is for you!

I do want to be a yoga teacher – is this course for me?

Yes, this is the yoga training for you! The Santosha Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka and Online Level 1 200-Hour Yoga Training is a Yoga Alliance / YA International accredited RYT-200 training – meaning you will learn the skills to obtain your certification and register as a RYT-200 teacher immediately upon graduation from your Bali, Byron Bay, Sri Lanka or Online studies – qualifying you to teach in gyms and yoga studios around the world.

When will I be ready to teach yoga after the YTT?

You will be ready to teach straight away once you graduate, having gained the skills, expertise, and confidence to sequence and lead yoga classes with ease! Many of our graduates are teaching yoga online and in person all around the world.

Can I join even if I have injuries or am not that flexible?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies; and therefore we teach safe and sustainable practices for all yogis. Aspiring teachers don’t need a perfect, injury-free body to be a teacher, or to join our course. Instructors who have had injuries themselves are often better at being aware of students’ limitations with flexibility or mobility and keeping them safe.

Can I join the course even if I feel nervous?

Yes, of course! It’s normal to feel hesitant about starting something new. Many of our students begin the course feeling fear of teaching, public speaking, or doing something new. We take care to create a supportive and accepting space like no other you have experienced. We’ll work with you where you’re at to help you build the confidence and skills you’ll need to share what you have learned (if that’s your goal).

I am older and cannot do all the postures. Can I still join you?

At Santosha, we believe that yoga is for everybody and all bodies – and that your practice should meet you where you are at. It’s no problem if you cannot access certain poses. There is no age barrier to accessing the incredible benefits of yoga practices and sharing them with others. We are getting an increasing number of students joining us in their 50s, 60s, and beyond on the yoga training and stepping up to teach – and we hope to see more!

I feel a bit nervous! Should I Still Do It?

Yes! This probably means you are ready to step into something amazing and new but you just need that extra encouragement to make the next brave step. We are here to offer this to you! You are welcome to email or WhatsApp us and let us know about anything standing in the way of following your dreams, and we can happily provide extra support – both before and during your time with us on the YTT – in a way that best suits YOUR individual nature and strengths.
